Gone to the Dogs – In Search of the Best Ballpark Hotdog by Tom Lohr
Excerpt from “APRIL 20–21”:
They say you can never go home again. I guess that is true in the intergalactic
sense, as well. I had been in Roswell, on business of all things, about four
years prior. I’d killed time that last trip by writing my expense report in a really
quirky and unique coffee shop that had a huge coffee cup attached to the outside
wall. The proprietor had dyed his hair green to give it a Roswell/alien ambiance,
and I really loved that place. Alas, it had closed when I returned. It had run out of
secret government research money, I guess. I sadly resorted to plunking my butt
down at a Roswell Starbucks. It was just up the road and past a fast food restaurant
with “UFO Parking in Back” on the marquee. This was my sort of town.
Before you think I am ragging on Starbucks, let me stop you. As you will read later
in this masterpiece, much of it was collated and written at Starbucks locations
across the United States. I would prefer to support the local coffee shops, though.
Not only do they need such support more than the monolithic Starbucks, but they
have more local flair and a more interesting clientele. While Starbucks is mainstream,
local coffee places are weird, and I love weird. I came to Roswell, didn’t I?
